Memoir of an Unnamed Soldier
Location
They gave me a gun,
they told me to shoot.
We fought in the sun,
and left in the moon.
They gave me a uniform,
the color of blue.
We fought in the warm,
and left in the cool.
They gave me no shield,
they showed me no love,
as I lay on the field,
in a puddle of my blood.
I'm only a boy,
in a sea of true soldiers.
Only death will give me joy,
as I float with the faces.
I hear them say their quiet prayers,
as they ask for the strength to rise again,
but I only pray for our slayers,
as they leave us here to die true warriors.

Was this poem inspired by a specific event? It's haunting -- reminds me so much of the battle of Fredericksburg.
I know what you mean -- the numbers killed/mortally wounded are staggering, not even counting those who died of disease or exposure, or as prisoners of war.
Anyway, it's a great poem (I wish it best of luck in the scholarship slam!) and it's good to see someone else on here who writes some historical poetry!
