This Is Me

Tue, 01/16/2018 - 13:40 -- KVJM

I'm a country girl from Maine and a tomboy at heart,

I write poems on anything from politics to art.

I'm well read and well rounded right down to my core,

I work hard and get dirty, always pushing for more.

I accomplish my goals and put my mind to the test,

I do my best work when I'm performing or pressed.

My childhood was special though some think it's queer,

I worked in a classroom at home every year.

Yes, I was sheltered but I don't live behind a mask,

and of course, I am socialized, don't even bother to ask.

We learned everything from math to cooking dinner at night,

in the summer we worked ‘till we ran out of light.

Winters brought snow right up to the roof,

if you don’t believe me, come visit for proof!

I wanted a challenge as high school drew to a close,

so classes in college are the route that I chose.

Chemistry, poetry, comp. one and comp. two,

Western Civ, Middle East, and Terrorism too.

My world grew bigger and my horizon expanded,

I fell in love with college and the work it demanded.

My professors were brilliant, inspiring, and kind,

They showed me the value in shaping your mind.

Before going to comp., writing was a chore,

and then poetry opened my soul like a door.

I couldn’t write well before this, it was all just a scrawl,

so believe me when I tell you this poem says it all.

I don’t shy away from work because I was raised in country dirt,

I’ve spent days in my boots shoveling mulch ‘till it hurts.

I clear snow for neighbors and cut and trim grass,

we take care of the elderly (even when they’re crass).

I’ve been in love with the stage ever since I was young,

so I took up some Shakespeare, just to have fun.

I was sick for auditions so I got a new position,

as assistant to the head lighting technician.

He liked me so much he said, “stick around,”

and that’s how I came to work for Blue Moon Lighting and Sound.

Last fall I was chosen to represent our Vets,

surrounded by students and ROTC cadets.

They sent us to Valley Forge to learn how to lead,

to honor our country and family, you see.

It was then that my interest in politics grew, at a pivotal time in our country, too.

I followed the election and started watching debates,

as we chose the next president of the United States.

I’m not outspoken but I can’t stand when one’s argument is flawed,

not based on true facts, or all slipshod.

What I’ve seen in the young people who think differently than me,

is how harmful not doing your research can be.

If you form your opinion by only looking at one side,

it’s easy to believe fake news and its lies.

I don’t like big crowds but I like the art of debate,

I’d like to learn the skill so that my arguments will be innate.

I change my mind every day because I like too many things,

and I want to live my life without any strings.

I don’t believe that my future is defined just by a major,

it’s the whole experience that opens doors, and on that, I’ll wager.

If I work hard and put my whole heart in everything,

then I’ll always be proud and live like a king.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”*

These things are unique and special, you see,

for these are the things that make the best me.
