THE LUMP

Like a weed it rooted itself in her chest
Out of the norm and different from the rest
It appeared unexpectedly
In the soil of a body so young
The Lump that changed her world

All she’s thinking is why?
Why at the age of fifteen does she have to endure this?
What has she done to deserve it?
She was days away from turning sixteen
When she found the lump that changed her world

Swayed her to and fro like a ship out at sea
However, in that moment, she couldn’t flee
She couldn’t escape the horrid dream
The nightmare that seemingly engulfed all her fears
Caused her to shed so many tears
The lump that changed her world.

It took her mind and body on an emotional roller coaster
Up and down with each passing day
Negative thoughts already emerging
Forging their way through and continued surging
Her mind was the match and her thoughts, the propane
When put together, they caused a disastrous flame
Growing hotter as the seconds ticked on by
Her only thought was, ‘I’m too young to die’.
The lump that changed her world

She laid in the operating room, hoping for the best
Praying that the lump wouldn’t put her to rest
Days later, the results came up positive
Not positive for cancer, but for a full recovery
The wave of relief that surged within her began to quell the flame
She held her head up as the fire began to tame
The lump that changed her world

Tears flowing freely whilst tremors rocked her body
When the doctor said, there were two, not just one
Both growing at such a rapid rate, the timing was impeccable
If found a month later, it may have been irreversible
Those months of her young life changed her
The lump that changed her world

Caused her to finally look out of her window and see
That in life, whirlwinds attempt to unhinge us
Spin us around in the wind gusts
And often times one cannot flee
One cannot escape this harsh reality
But can only hope to cope with life’s unpredictability

The lump that changed her world
