Love Rebound

I didn’t think I loved you

I thought I only cared

I cared when you were happy

I cared when you were scared

I cared when you hurt yourself

I cared how well you ate

I cared when you laughed at nothing

Or when you forgot the date

I cared whether people listened to you

Or talked behind your back

I didn’t know what you had

That others seemed to lack

In a room full of people

I cared most for you

Laughed when no one heard your joke

Told you to tie your shoe

I didn’t want life to hurt you

The way that it hurts me

And that’s when I realized

That in caring for you I had started caring for me

I guess the more I loved you

The more I loved myself

I didn’t know love worked that way

It was a love I’d never felt

You taught me something beautiful

And you didn’t even know

Now I think I love you

But I’m willing to let you go

Because I love you

You don’t have to be mine

So long as you are happy

Everything will be fine

You taught me how to love

And I’m happy and ok

Things aren’t always perfect

But, my love, they are today
