A Little Girl from Belize

She walked up to me

A soul distracted by the beauty she never knew

She was beautiful

An innocent joy that could not be further from the truth

Smiled through the pain

And I smiled back

In a glass world shattering behind her

She pleasantly said, "Thank you," and continued home

But in those few moments we were here

Strangers unaware of empty pockets and endless fears

Because in those few moments it didn't matter

We are calm while storms rage on

Our clothes sink into our skin and we don't feel a thing

This is our world, despite what they tell us

And when we get to the end of it

Our flame will stay lit, burning into the earth

A red bow seeping into a colorless film

Because she loves her life even in black and white

Clouds cannot shade her sunny day

She knows it may never shine again

Yet she will always be okay

Happiness is gift that no one can take away

Nothing that you are required to do or say

It will be your friend, by your side to hell and back

Perspective changed to a view much brighter than you thought

Because everything is awesome even when it seems like it's not

Smile because you helped me realize how precious life is

Smile because I still care about you, as each person fades to black

Smile because I won't ever stop loving you

Smile because that's who you are

Smile so I can smile back.
