In Light of

Light went out and like a roach

Boy hid,

Long wait, short wait,

Two-tone clock ticking ‘till

Good ‘ol Mr. Sunshine flashed his pearly whites

And kissed the ground into shadows

Wasn’t much to do about time.

Covers shifted, the boy

Young boy—mind you

Not old enough to understand

The world had a balance to

Tip the scales in favor of light

To dark, light to dark, and that

Right wasn’t his to tie a collar ‘round

And tug the sun like a balloon in

His endless blue jay summer—

Scared boy, looking into the unfairness

Brushed the tips of his toes together and

Shuddered in face of the light.
