life of a chameleon pt. 1

My mother did not lay the egg

For me to be perfect.

It is not her genes who made me a beautiful destruction

For she is love and empathy

Hiding from the snakes and birds

Has made me afraid to step out of

My comfort zone,

Let alone leap for the trees.

I did not learn to change my rainbow

Because I desired to stand out

I adapted to the change

I needed to blend in.

There is a reason my cousins

Of horns and orange colors

Live within the dead leaves

Of the forest floor

I was not taught to embrace who I was

And that is why I change colors.
