Land of the Free Home of the Brave
Land of the free, home of the brave
Hard to say when I’m treated like a slave
Division like chasms far and wide
I must live in this Great Divide
Prejudice from the moment I was born
Skin that others seek to scorn
They don't tell the story of the conquered
So I'm led to believe that they were weak when they were slaughtered
Hate is a thing only taught
In the cycle of poverty, they have me caught
Twenty seven percent is a stat worth noting
Closed polling places keep me from voting
I write on walls because our schools are underfunded
The walls are peeling and the classrooms are flooded
They say to break the cycle I need knowledge
But they don’t prepare me to go to college
I’m forced to fight for what I don’t believe
When I come back, help I don’t receive
The oppressors refuse to take the blame
I must pay with the fortune I'm not allowed to obtain
I watch a mother in pain
As bills accumulate like rain
Her eyes begin to moisten
As she watches her children feed off poison
A man aside the road goes ignored
Asking for food passersby can't afford
If only we’d practice the equality we preach
If only we’d put more truth in our speech
If only we’d care for each other more
If only we’d help like it wasn’t a chore
If only we’d teach love instead of hate
If only we’d open up the gate
And put division in its grave
Build bridges instead of walls
Create a nation that no one recalls
Land of the free, home of the brave
