Lake Street Vibes

Wed, 09/09/2015 - 22:48 -- santana

on the southside, you'll find

friends, enemies, lovers, and wanderers.

while i walk, i read people's faces.

some familiar.

some strange.

some bright.

some brown.

some light.

around here, you'll find that culture is everywhere.

i grew up with the Latinos, learning how to be Latina.

when high school came around, i stuck with the Natives where i learned how to be Native.

my whole life was built here.

here is where i learned how to be an activist, an intelligent, a hard working, and a compassionate person.

the communities surrounding have its hardships, and struggles weighing on its back. but

i'll never forget the empowering moments where my people came together as one.

i've never experienced something so special and unique.

i'm telling you, cause these things aren't shown on the local news.

my people here aren't weak.

i used to want to run away, when i was praying for better days.

i used to hate where i came from,

i knew i was destined for more.

anywhere else was where i wanted to be.

but i know in my heart, these streets and these places are what made me.

when i am away, i close my eyes and imagine home.

i imagine my friends, my family, the lightrail, the 21, Migizi, the Minneapolis sky and these Lake Street vibes.
