Like the human she is beauty,
Unlike the human she stands on four legs.
She snorts. She swats a fly with her tail.
In the mud she naps for hours.
Jojo shudders awake.
She responds to my love
Anytime of day.
With elegance her feet pound the Earth
Her shoes igniting a spark with each hit.
Saddled up she knows everything,
Moving cautiously to ensure my safety.
Her attention is captured by a rabbit running nearby,
Then she trots off with pride and arrogance.
In the arena, she ponders the three barrels
She stomps impatiently,
And makes it known that there is no moment
That should not be treasured.

Jojo is my hero,
She executes every move with beauty
She dries my tears
She accepts and loves me without judgment.

Jojo is my best friend,
And if she were the sun, she would shine her light into every person’s life –
Oh! How she would shine, brighter than all the other stars
And stand tall reigning over all the land.
She has befriended all other horses,
Her ancestors once ran wild
And galloped across the Earth.
Jojo shelters me from the rain and the snow,
Keeping me safe and warm.
Under the blue sky she pulled a carriage,
Steered cattle across a pasture,
She wisely let the rattlesnake pass,
Ran from the cracking whip,
Sang with the other horses.

Jojo’s eyes are like a compass
For she knows the world. She has spied danger,
Whinnied at the starlit sky,
She has left her hoof print in my heart.
Sometimes she is tied to the rail,
And sometimes she struggles to rip off the bandages
That protect her wounds.
But Jojo is love.
She gives me a nudge to ask for attention,
When I say her name, time freezes,
She forgets about what she is doing
And comes running.
This loving companion for life.
When I stop the world
And look closely enough at her,
I can see myself in her eyes.
