Inside Joke

What a joke.

I’m not going to try to get too political,

Antagonistic,

Sarcastic,

Pessimistic.

But it’ll be damn hard not too when talking about this last year.

It was like watching the walls of Jericho come down,

The zombie invasion that would precede the end of the human race,

Or seeing someone try to fit into something clearly made for someone five sizes smaller.

Painful to watch, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away.

Maybe I was so transfixed by the absurdity of American voters,

But it could also be the incredible talent that passed away this year:

Princess Leia, the artist formerly known as Prince, Professor Severus Snape, Ziggy Stardust.

And not just talent,

But ordinary people,

Regular citizens like me,

Fifty of them,

Who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It could’ve been the intense political and social tensions that’ve only risen in the past month or two,

Or it might be the fact that for once,

Things affected me more than I would like to admit.

2016 made me fearful, it made me disappointed, it made me involved.

2016 included me in her turbulent, roller-coaster ride of a year,

And when it was over,

I was more relieved than I’ve ever been.
