I'll pretend that everything is awesome

"Write a poem"

they say

"about how everything is awesome!"

Okay.

Let's pretend that's true

Let's pretend my best friend didn't just commit suicide

Let's pretend I'm not writing this because I'm already working three jobs but I still won't be able to afford college without scholarships.

Let's pretend that my heart isn't cracked and my world is still revolving

I'll pretend.

"Read poems that have won in the past"

they say

"to get ideas for your poem!"

Okay.

Let's pretend the poems I read inspired me to positivity

Let's pretend I wasn't depressed by all the tragically beautiful poems penned by broken hearts

Let's pretend I didn't cry because their ink was blood that stained my soul

Let's pretend I wasn't beginning to understand the reason for this prompt

I'll pretend.

"Writers are the best"

they say

"at finding the silver lining of life!"

Okay.

Let's pretend the greatest writers didn't live tortured lives

Let's pretend we don't write to expose our inner demons

Let's pretend the words aren't a sweet release from the chains our pains provide

I'll pretend.

"What is one thing you would say to the whole world?"

they ask

"If you were given the chance"

Okay.

My reply?

Everything is awesome

I can pretend.
