I stay for you

Hair, it was always a chore to do but you would do it anyways because you love me and also it was a way of bonding.

It had become a ceremony that we made.  The morning was always busy for words. The evenings however, were rare and holy.

You would sit me down on a cushion stool, while you would be elevated a few inches in a chair behind me.

When I felt your heavy fingers sink into my fro the ceremony begin.

“B.”

“Yes mom.”

“What kind of person you will marry?”

“ A follower of God, kind, honest and pure in body, mind , and soul.” This was a question you would often ask till I engraved this answer in my brain.

Still, with that in mind my dad and step dad are not her examples of marriage material.

“Do not make the same mistake I make. “

Especially when those mistakes yell at you through the cell whenever you would ask money to feed your children.

“B.”

“Yes mom.”

“When will you marry?”

“ When I am an educated and financially stable adult. So I won’t have to depend on anyone.” Another memorized answer and another error made by mom.

And those errors would cause her to leak like an ancient roof, but only at night when she made sure that I was asleep.

“ I stay for you”

“I know” compare to hers my comment make it sound like this was old news and it was.

Fact is I always know. For every sharp word that cuts you, for every tear fall, for every fist of dirt thrown at you. You swallow your dignity like bitter medicine hoping life would get better. Not for you, never for you you’re too sick to be saved but you do it for your children.

If you were younger or if

You didn’t have us then you wouldn’t have to invite worms in your bed of roses.

Nonetheless that didn’t happen, yet you willingly sacrifice yourself for our sake.

You stayed for me, for us but no women should go through what you went through yet the fact is that’s never the case .
