He said
“Hello, Ms. or Mrs. I’m so glad you came.
Your interview’s next, m’am. What is your name?”
“My name is Brittany” I shakingly spoke;
My chest felt heavy and I thought I could choke.
He sat me down, looked into my eyes,
read through my resume, and acted surprised.
“This is impressive. Intelligence pays!
And your beauty is rare;
I can’t help but to gaze.
Anyways madam, I’m curious to know:
Just where do you come from? How far back do you go?”
“Well, I was born in Australia, but my mother’s from Spain.
My father’s from Asia, my grandma Ukraine.
My grandfather’s Irish. His roots go way back!
And as you can see, my ancestors are b-“
“WOW Mrs. Brittany, that’s quite of a load!
If I hear one more, my brain will explode!
Well, you’re hired.
For this job, you’d have a knack.
I’m quite relieved and taken aback.
From you’re dark complexion, I could’ve sworn you were black,
but luckily, that’s one trait you lack.”

The next week I thought and stared down at the floor.
I contemplated,
thought again,
and pondered some more.
I called the nice man and said
“Listen, Sir. Thanks for the job.
But before I accept, you must know about Rob.
Rob was my brother. He’s white and now rich.
He hated my guts and called me a witch.
Since he had a black sister, people would stare.
Kids would make fun of him and he’d call that unfair.
My skin ain’t light, and my eyes aren’t clear,
but I’m a hard worker and I am sincere.
Don’t know if you see that or if you’d even care.
Would you hire a black woman? Would you even dare?
Before you reply, I’d like you to know
That your racist attitude has gotta go.
I’m tired of people like you.
I thought you’d be different, one of the few.

one that you rejected back in the day.
My uncle’s a lawyer.
You’ve been sued and you go to court today.
