I am me

When you look at me what do you see

What do you think

Do you see my darker skin

And think she’s dumb or commits a great deal of sin

Do you see my kinky, coily hair

And think it’s nappy and it makes me unprofessional

But in naturality, it holds my strength

So you turn the blind eye to me and turn me down for the job

Or

Do you see beyond my eyes

And see my wide smile that hides so much pain

Pain that is the source of my strength

Stronger than your best candidate

Yet you still pass me up, cross my name off the list

I’ve been through hard times and maybe you can tell from my appearance

But I am not my skin or my hair

I am powerful, strong, and passionate

Yet you don’t see that

Cause all you see is what you want to see

And that’s my imperfections, my shortcomings

You see my abnormalities

And call me a minority

I am a minority

But I am not my skin color

Dont get me wrong, I love my skin

Its beauty surpasses many things

But I am more than that

So get to know me

Take away the stereotypes and you’ll realize that I’m not what you thought

I am me
