I Am Exactly Who My Mama Made Me To Be

I am a fighter,

I am an overcomer,

I am me.

It all started when I was only three.

I said goodbye to my mama,

Because she wanted the best for me.

She got down on her knees,

And told me how much she loved me.

I screamed and cried the whole way “home”,

And wondered why she’d ever leave me.

That day in San Bernardino County,

I left behind a piece of me.

Adoption is a crazy thing,

It makes you wonder “Why me?”

People always told me,

She didn’t really want me.

People always told me,

She’s never coming back for me.

Fourteen whole years later,

When I was seventeen,

I found my mama’s facebook,

And she told me that she loved me.

We messaged for a while,

And then I called her up.

Tears were falling,

As I heard my mama’s voice.

She told me not to cry,

She told me not to fear.

She told me that we would never ever have to say goodbye.

Now its two years later,

She rents an apartment with me.

I sit here in amazement,

And know she really loves me.

When I wake up in the morning,

She tells me that she loves me.

When I go to school or work,

She tells me that she believes in me.

The brother that she gave me,

Well he is in the navy.

I used to see him everyday,

When I was only three.

Now I see him twice a year,

Since I turned seventeen.

I am me and that’s all I want to be,

I am loved,

And that is enough for me.

My life has come together,

Since that day when I was three.

I am strong,

I am Loved.

I am an overcomer.

I am me.
