I was a mirror shattered into a million pieces.

I was a sinking ship slowly being swallowed by the sea.

I was a dying rose.

I was a neverending waterfall of tears.

I was a bird with broken wings who dreamed of flying.

But most of all, I was a broken heart still trying to beat.

Today,

I am a mirror, with a beautiful, intelligent girl in my reflection.

I am a strong ship, steady in the midst of brutal waves.

I am a budding rose.

I am a neverending well of courage.

I am a bird soaring high up in the sky towards my dreams.

But most of all, I am a huge heart filled with love.

I used to struggle with depression really bad for many years.  Over time, I have learned how to cope with my depression when it flares up.  But the most important thing I have learned is that my depression does not define who I am.
