How You Healed Me

Location

Nigeria

When I first met you,

He had broken my body into fragments.

Scattered my soul to the wind.

And killed me inside with every cold caules word

That fell from his seemingly sweet lips.

When you look at me it is not the same,

As when his roaming stare was penetrating me,

To the very core of my being.

Freezing me from the inside out.

Slowly but surely.

But before I met you,

I didn’t know any of this was wrong,

I thought that his brutal love for me was normal.

That he just wanted to protect me

Like I was the most precious gem in the world

When I was with him things were different

Than they are now with you.

Now there are no more smacks, kicks, or spits in my face,

When I share my opinion.

That you do not agree with.

There is no more

Monitoring my every move.

Isolating me from my friends and family.

Shaming me when I do something wrong

And degrading my body because it is not perfect

I feel so naive for letting him

Control my hairstyles,

My clothing,

My emotions

My everything

But when you walked into my life

You took one look

At my bruised and deformed soul

And you saw threw the scares

To see the strong heart that was there originally

You walked up to me carefully

Like if you were to quick

I would bolt like a cornered animal

Like if you were to loud

I would fade away like the sun at night

At first I didn’t know how to react

To your gentle kindness

It was not something I was used to

But soon enough you showed me

The keys to making our pure love last

You see there isn’t one simple answer

To make a love lasting and true

There are millions of small pieces

To the bigger working machine

That cause it all to work

Trust and honesty

Are one small part

Forgiveness and understanding another

And they are just few out of countless others

To the bigger work of art

I know I didn’t need you

To lift me off the ground

And put me back together again

But with you by my side I felt

A thousand times stronger

We can’t go back in time

Or erase what has happened

But what we can do is grow into better people

Because the love we have for ourselves and eachother

Is worth more than anything in the world
