how They see it in primary school

This is why I chose to start writing poetry. Many of my teachers disregarded me since I already knew the curriculum.

In my free time at school, I would write poetry to express how I was feeling, and it would make my day a little better.

how They see it in primary school

final exams approach

paraded in on a chariot of Scantron bubbles, eraser shavings, and pencil dust

They say

“This is what you have been waiting for,

preparing for,

living for.”

as if our education could be confined to a piece of white paper

as white as the little lies They tell us everyday

They say

“Remember what we have ‘taught’ you and you will do great!!!!!”

but behind closed doors

They say

“According to our predictions, only 35% will pass this year.”

They say

“You are right on average with the rest of your peers.”

we know what average means

why should we be content with average

lingering in mediocrity when we can

RACE ahead defying all standards and averages they try to put in front of us

in tired excel spreadsheets

and graphs with small neat labels

placing us in our respected groups

just like the little boxes They check off

They say

check

“He knows the curriculum.”

check

“So does She.”

check

check

check

we shouldnt be boxed in by the words drilled into our heads

They say

“Knowledge is power.”

but we know that knowledge is discovering far more than what can be memorized

and one day

They will realize

we hid our knowledge all along
