How free do you feel?

As I look deeply at life as it is,
I think about how although our country has dramatically changed since times of Reconstruction,
As systematic degradation perpetuates,
Our country still has not overcome all of the barriers to Black advancement.

Within our own racial lines, we create prejudice;
Making assumptions and stereotypes about our own people,
And then enforcing those assumptions and stereotypes upon society.

Too often, society takes a piece of somebody like skin color,
Whether it be dark or light,
And say that defines who you are.
Too often, society uses words like nigger and mulatto,
And say that defines who you are.

But, do no let society call you these insecure and immature things
Because you are just you,
And I am just me.
Most of society does not even take time to look back at that word’s history.

It is not a question of being pure.
We cannot be pure with our history,
But we must escape from such anguish and ignorance;
Free our minds, open our eyes.
Oh, it is so possible.
We must come together, stay together and work together
To destroy those out-dated concepts that are not only socially divisive,
but scientifically inaccurate.
