Headlines Arise

News reporters are unfair

However,

Twitter keeps me updated

It keeps me woke

A new mugshot everyday

Of a black man with ten years

And for what?

For theft.

I’m sorry they made you a monster

You were just trying to provide for your boys.

The media is against you

Headlines destroy you

You become an enemy

when you only had a need

to help your family.

On the flip side

Headlines arise

Good guy

Bad decisions

Loving father commits suicide

After murdering his wife and kids.

A family photo shows his unconditional love.

Unjustifiable

He gets sympathetic news coverage.

His intentions.

Unjustifiable

It’s sad that

The manner in which their story is told

Conveys the type of people

That they were not.

P.O.C. are made to seem

Like savage criminals

And white men are made to be seen

As angels who lost their wings.

Black boys are lawbreakers

White suspects were outstanding in school.

WHO CARES

Give equal news coverage

Representation matters

P.O.C. children’s early idea

Of what they are

In society’s eyes

Shapes what they

Believe themselves to be.

My country
