Hast Thou Been to Paradise?
Hast thou been to Paradise?
He asked me as I rolled the dice
In a small game of chance.
That word does not suit my fanc'.
Nothing is certain, I say,
Nor Heaven, nor Hell, nor Purgatory.
Life is a game, my dear friend.
Like this game of chance; for th'end
Is yet unknown to me and to you.
Be it Paradise of th'hell down below.
Have I been to Paradise?
Nay, my friend, for the dice
Is still in His Almighty hand.
