Hands Up

Was it my face

the color of my skin

was it my size

was it my stride

that made you apprehend

me with the excuse

that I was a threat

When nobody checked

to see if me and the streets had ever met

As I passed you I held my breath

kept my eyes off you as my palms filled with sweat

Hands Up

Didn't know I only had seconds left

before the light would go out

and i would experience this disconnect

hands up

don't shoot

I was just on the stoop

politicing on how to recoup

the lack of unity within my group

This poem is about:
My family
My community
My country
Our world
