GUIDANCE COUNSELOR

ONE JOB. . .

One hope,

One ambition.

Is what we are made to choose,

during our high school days.

Before we are 18,

and can legally smoke.

Before we are 21,

and can legally drink.

Before we are 25,

and our brains have not fully developed.

So why are we made to choose that

ONE JOB

that we are suppose to do for the rest of our lives?

When our brains,

OUR bodies,

OUR opinions,

OUR outlook on life,

have not fully developed?

Why are we expected to act like adults,

before we are considered adults?

Why are we expected to make adult choices,

before we are considered adults?

Why are we able to be punished, like adults,

before we are even considered to be an adult?

ONE JOB . . .

One hope,

One ambition.

Is the goal that teenagers are forced to make,

while in high school.

And I want to be there to tell them they don’t have to make it.

That all the pressure put upon them, does not actually matter.

That they don’t have to choose that

ONE JOB,

that they will do for the rest of their lives.

Because when the majority of students

go into college,

to pursue that career they were forced to make in high school,

50 to 70% of those students,

change their minds.

And all the pressure that was put upon them

during their high school years,

DID NOT MATTER.

Because

My ONE JOB

One hope,

One ambition,

is to be there for the future students of America,

who are being forced to make the choice

that will define the rest of their lives,

before their brains are fully developed.

That the stress they are feeling,

should not matter.

That they can go into college,

change their major,

pursue what they actually love,

(not what their parents want them to love,)

because all they will need in the end

is to be happy with the choices they made,

after their brains have fully developed.

My ONE JOB

that I have been lucky enough to figure out,

is to change the lives of my future students,

Help them figure out their ONE JOB that

MAY CHANGE THEIR LIFE,

and,

. . . MAY CHANGE MY LIFE.

I love this poem. Great and powerful insight into the unrealistic expectations set upon us students.
