Grandma Who

Location

Grandma who gives hugs like a scratchy wool sweater

and waves goodbye from the driveway

who is warm cookies and salty chips

who is wire-rimmed glasses and a cold can of Pepsi

whose basement is full of treasures

who tells me she misses me over the phone

who tells me she wishes I could visit in a sad tone

whose soft hands are comforting

can’t fly on a plane

thinks maybe she could take the train

who used to live with the love of her life

is taking care of a small white dog

is walking in the frigid cold and burning heat

is keeping busy in an old house

doesn’t see us anymore

is worried one day she won’t be able to get out of bed

who tells me words that echo inside my head

is Chicago and pink chairs and mints

who paces back and forth and back and forth and back and forth

is planes overhead that rattle the windows like an earthquake

asking who will take care of her now?

who will love her now?
