Goodbye

I can still remember that day

I was left with no words to say

I sat at the table to cry

I never got to say goodbye

The service of mourning and tears

While we looked back on all your years

Continuously asking why

I never got to say goodbye

Years ago when my hair would curl

A befuddled eight year old girl

For the first time saw her dad cry

I never got to say goodbye

And years from now I'll hear the song

Break down in tears and sing along

By then I will understand why

I never got to say goodbye
