Girl Behind the Mask(s)

They say a person has three personalities:
one when you are with your friends,
one when you are with your family,
and one when you are alone,
that you never show anyone.

Each personality is worn
like a mask
each one is different from the others
but they all share one thing in common,
the person behind them.

I am a happy
caring
sarcastic
smart person
with my friends

I am a quiet,
secluded
tempermental
yet obedient daughter
to my parents.

Yet, when I am alone
everything comes crashing down
around me

the walls that I have built up so high
to keep others out.

I am alone
lonely
scared
anxious
depressed
just plain neurotic.

Being alone or,
being lonely,
scares me
because even I
don't like who I am.

I hide to make them think
that I deserve their attention,
love
support
but I don't think I do.

When I'm alone.

My masks protect me,
and the others
around me
from discovering the true me,
the girl behind the mask.
