Genes of You

For my twin I never met-

As I close my eyes, I hear a voice of sweet cherry blossoms

A sweet cheerleader who joins the hum of gossips

Ginger roots of blonde—red hair flowing in the breeze

A rush of emotion as you watch me wear shirts with sleeves.

One day in heaven, I promise we will play

Springtime in the Montanan Mountains, month of May?

Two genetic parallels, under one blanket, fighting the cold winds.

Visiting your beautiful family as we grow into a pair of old twins.

I would play the piano as you softly sing

Like an angel, sister, guide me under your wing.

My birthday could have been ours

On Valentine’s, I’d always send flowers.

For you I will always be bold,

Only if you truly stay gold.

Children at the pool, splashing each other with water

In high school, boys would think you were the hotter

You would be the most popular and hate my best-friend

As I would be teased, it’d be me who you would always defend

Show me how to smile as I cry

Teach our mom to be fearless as we fly

With no money in the bank, I would skip college for you, and live off government checks

In trade for science test answers, I would tutor you in your worst subjects.

I see you as a young wise girl wearing white lace

Ladybugs swarm me on the beach, in them, I see your face.

Protect me from the night-terrors, I’m asleep on your first home

Pictures of you behind a maternity shirt in monochrome

We would be opposites, but together, two would make one.

I know you are out there somewhere above the amber sun.

My dear, you were a little bigger than a flea

Wrapped in mother’s vines, I set you free.
