For Freedom Beat

I don’t deserve to exist

when all I am is a miss

of expectations, successful accusations

solely lamentations of

thriving threats and predicted regrets,

depressing desolations of deprived sanity

my childhood one huge catastrophe, a cancelation

next step graduation

cap and gown wait for a liberation

a salvation from this 21st generation dictation

telling me what to believe, what it means to succeed

in a world green not with leaves but by greed

dollar signs tattoo the sleeves, USA land of the free.

But the brave are more like me

a heart-beating travesty from

sea to shining sea

struggling to achieve that college degree,

a piece of paper worth nothing more

than the stack paid financially.

Known for higher education, I am the first generation

Meant to seek the grand opportunity paved by Lady Liberty

Our country’s way of saying this is equality let’s defy gravity

But this is all just a fantasy

what reigns is mortality for

Our spacious skies a big fat lie

When you find yourself on that balcony

Wondering what it’s like to die.
