Free Verse
A poem that follows no students only feelings
Freedom
Free education
Forced miseducation
I am free to learn about the history of how your ancestors met mine
Well free to read from the unlimited edition of their erasure
In high school, my US History book said “the plantation workers picked cotton, it was hard”
This is all the story my history book had to say about my history
And just like that, a white hand wrote over my melanin in an ink darker than me
We are then criticized for the silence that follows when asked the question
“Where do you come from?”
Because we don’t know
Because our history was deliberately destroyed
