A Father's Mistake

Oh dad,

You’ve made the same mistake twice

Keep thinking it’s a phase

That your children can’t all be gay

You don’t see the pain you bring

With careless words and harsh tones

I know you mean well

But you need to listen

We know ourselves

More than you do

Every time we come out

You tell us we’re wrong inside

We build up the courage

And you shut us down

One gay daughter

Is all you’ll tolerate?

That’s the impression

That you end up leaving

Bisexuality is a real thing

But you treat it like it’s unreal

Offering doctors and pills

Why do you push him away?

You know what you’re doing

I can see it in your face

Can’t accept your only son

If he’s not straight?

There are reasons I left home

You couldn’t condone

My way of living

You expected something more

And I wasn’t made right

To your satisfaction
