Family Doesn't End in Blood, and Everything is Awesome

Darkness.

That is all I used to see in this world we live in.

Darkness,

The total absence of life,

Of joy,

Of love

Of awesomeness.

Then I met someone,

A girl in middle school, now my best friend,

With a similar outlook.

But when I was ready to give up,

She kept going.

She smiled,

Laughed,

Loved,

Dragged me from tears and sadness and melancholy

To cheer and friendship and love.

She saw the darkness,

But acted like it was the light.

We got older,

Middle schoolers no more,

But High School seniors,

Fighting the darkness together,

Chanting “Family doesn’t stop at blood,”

Threatening balls over a broken heart,

Making friends cry as we tell our Wayward Sons to Carry On

(and shouting “SAMMY!”, of course),

Picking each other up when the darkness is too much,

Reminding each other not to let our demons control us.

She keeps me fighting…

…along with many others.

My Mother,

A gamer who fights the darkness herself.

My father,

A geek who keeps me smiling with an interesting book.

My other friends,

Geeks, gamers, cosplayers galore.

All of them awesome.

They are my everything,

My light,

My “awesomeness.”

I used to see only darkness,

But now I see the awesome light,

My eyes opened by my friends—

Nay, My family.

Family doesn’t end in blood,

And everything

Is

Awesome.
