Enlighten Me

What makes you American?

Is it throwing out the green for the blue, the vertical stripes for the horizontal ones?

Is it replacing gracias with thank you?

Is it saving the fireworks for july instead of may?

Is it hand-over-heart, “liberty and justice for all”?

Is it embracing a culture you didn’t grow up with for the sake of assimilation?

and then, as if that isn’t enough

Is it teaching a culture you didn’t grow up with for the sake of assimilation?

Is it years of taxation- hundreds and thousands of dollars for your American schools- without a single damn vote?

Is it relentlessly, foolishly, chasing the American Dream?

No,

No,

That can’t be it. Or else we would’ve been American a long time ago.
