The Elusive American Dream

What happened to the American dream?

Is it hidden within the earthly boundaries

That separate opportunity and disparity?

Is it trapped in the hearts of the hopeless?

Who shackle it within their bare and begging bodies.

Did it run out?

As fast as the ink in the bruised pens used to fill out countless job applications?

Or maybe it has been lost,

Like the careers that families staked their lives on.

Has it been forgotten?

Like the smiles on the faces of the fed, and the laughter in the voices of the vibrant.

Has it been dropped?

Like the tears of mother's and father's who can't support their babies.

We shall weep and weep

Until the balance between bank accounts is established.

We shall weep and weep

Until we are recognized not as haves or a have nots, but as will haves who seize the opportunities they are blessed with.

We will weep and weep

Until financial strife is done being seen as a personal dilemma and is finally seen as the global catastrophe that it truly is.

Once equality is eminent on the horizon,

It's warming light will dry our tears,

And illuminate the dreams hiding in the shadows.
