Defining Me

If you could open a dictionary and look up a name,

Each name listed there, may seem pretty much the same.

There’s a last name, a comma, followed by a first

Some may have nicknames, or something else interspersed.

But out beside each name, there’s a picture, you see,

Because that’s how the world, defines you and me.

She’s pretty, he’s handsome, they have long curly hair.

He is short, she is funny, or even by what they wear.

These are words that we use, and we hear others say,

We let them define us, and we define others this way.

When you come to my name, I pray it stands out

I‘m called to live in the world but be different, no doubt.

I have this one simple thing that sets me apart,

I long to be known by the love in my heart.

It’s a love for others so strong and so true,

That the Lord of my life may come shining through.

Not by beauty or riches or any such things,

I’m defined by my Father; He’s the King of Kings!
