On Death

Death is but a passage,

A door to the other side,

Where the portal leads to,

One’s choices on earth decide

 

Famine, illness,

War, and age,

These are the names,

By which the End masquerades

 

Death is feared,

But what is feared all the more,

Is what comes after,

And not before

 

Heavenly height,

Or hellish depth,

Which one will await the soul,

When one has lost his strength?

 

To accept the gift,

Paid for by Christ,

Or reject God’s mercy,

And pay the price?

 

That is the question,

Essential to our being,

Our answer forever binding,

One fettering

The other freeing
