Dear new roommate Jim or Pete, Kindly drop me a beat!

Location

Hello, new friend (as I hope I can call you)!

I look forward to meeting you when I see you this fall.

You are surely a kind and respectable fellow, maybe funny and mellow.

But I don’t know you at all… yet.

I can’t imagine if you’re red-haired or brunette,

If you’re an only child or one of a sextet.

(Gosh, how grueling.) But let me start this one-sided tête-à-tête

With a little background, a little vignette.

A normal winter day, all you hear is the fireplace.

(Well, you also hear the click of keys at a furious pace.)

But up on the wall, what can it be?

Oh yes, oh yes. A spider I see.

Now normally someone would grab the nearest thing and swing and smash.

My course of action’s different, but that won’t stop me. I’m not abashed.

I look for the bug catcher, trap it and set it free.

Outside, of course, where it was meant to be.

I don’t have the heart to kill anything, even

Spiders or ants or wasps with their awful stings.

I’m a kind, compassionate person, that’s what I want you to see.

I even get sad when cartoon characters cry on T.V.

I’m not a vindictive chap. That’s the reason I wrote this

Part of the rap. I promise that I’m never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around, and hurt you…

Sorry....

And if you didn’t catch from the way this letter’s writ,

With its attention to rhythm and rhyme,

I love music. I sing all the time and never tire of it.

Hence the fact I’ve chosen to explain this in 4/4 time.

I hope that’s something we can share.

I hope you won’t stop and stare

When I’m dancing around, pretending that I’m Fred Astaire,

(Sorry you have to see this, didn’t know you were there)

Singing the latest Adele song.

Just help me out and sing along.

It’ll be great! You see, I’m a fun-loving guy.

Though I have to say, my humor’s pretty dry.

But I’m sure you can put up with the bad jokes, if you’re game.

I have good ones pretty often; they’re not all lame.

So once you’re past the sarcasm, ‘tis no lie,

We’ll be best friends! See you soon. Goodbye!
