Daughter

Daughter

Overwhelmed by the thought of your ever looming presence,

but I’m joyful for your soon to be adolescence.

Terrified by the notion of not being good enough,

I don’t want you to see me as a big crème puff.

Fearful of my words causing you harm,

I hope you fall in love with me and my charm.

Protective of you every day of my life,

I’ll always be there for you through the strife.

Elated to look into your face,

I’ll hate it when you push me away for your space.

Hope filled for the woman you will soon become,

But drugs I hope you'll abstain from.

For now, just eager to hold you in my arm,

And rock you to sleep on our little southern farm.
