I can picture the soldiers,
Trying to swim in the pools of liberty.
Risking their lives,
Trying to make their mark in history.
This war was not over money or land,
Its purpose was to free a race who been dealt a horrible hand.
Bloody battles scattered dead bodies like a breeze blowing grains of sand.
It’s a tragedy to witness man going against man.
Lincoln was pleading like Moses “let my people go!”
However, the rich land owners chuckled,
Replying with a stern “no”.
Very few,
Approximately one in four Southern farmers owned slaves,
But their power was great,
And they wanted it to remain that way.
North screamed “justice!”
South screamed “ready arms!”
Both sides ready to injure and harm.
Both agreed the battle would be quick.
In three months time a winner would be picked.
They were in for a surprise when that timeline was kicked.
The Confederate was ready to cry “victory”,
However,
The Union gained power when they truly discovered the meaning of unity.
Letting the men with skin dark as night finally fight for what’s right.
Soon the Confederates victory was out of sight.
But even though the proclamation was given,
The truth was still kept hidden.
For many slaves believed freedom was still pending.
What’s crazier is even when that chapter of slavery met its ending,
A sequel of prejudice just started beginning.
Sure chains were let loose physically,
But the people enslaved by ignorance used new chains made mentally.
African-Americans held on to their golden bars of hope.
They clothed with love even when threated with a death rope.
Jim Crow Laws were established and needed to be extinguished.
Separate but equal wasn’t fair, and it didn’t take a genius.
The Greensboro four and the little Rock Nine,
Examples of youth letting their light shine,
Served in the mission of integration,
For their heroic acts I contain much appreciation.
I’m thankful for all the artists, and people in the media,
For all the lawyers, judges, and leaders you can research on Wikipedia,
That fought for civil rights,
And for future generations to experience a different life.
Many went through much tribulation and strife.
Equality was earned,
But not with a brutality knife.
Now that we are freed form the sanctions of captivity,
Let future generations conquer other hills of negativity.
