Cheese and Mac

Everybody talks about how disgusting school lunches are.

I never really had the chance to agree with that misnomer,

because every school lunch i have EVER had

has been pretty much delicious.

Then again, im a food addict.

So.

I have a very specific memory of fourth grade (I think),

and it was mac-and-cheese day (I think),

and I was REALLY hungry(I think... but then again, when am i not).

Okay, so maybe not so specific.

Nevertheless,

it is one of my strongest childhood memories.

From what I can remember, I was sitting at a lunch table at the edge of the cafeteria,

you know,

where the authorities prowl.

I remember skipping fruits and veggies

for a double helping of mac-n-cheese.

I knew mom would be angry that I got doubles,

but in fourth grade i didnt really understand what the words

"money"

and "expensive" meant.

I gobbled down every noodle, barely pausing to breathe,

swigged the carton of milk when i was done,

and then i

licked

my

plate

clean.

And, apparently, I had a visitor.

One of the authorities was laughing at me, so I put my plate down

and bowed my head in shame.

"It was good," I muttere, making excuses for my...

behavior?

But the authority just shook her head and said,

"There are starving children in africa."

Then she walked away, chucling.
