Bystander

I am writing to you about this student,
Who is much quieter than most.
She hears the jeers as whispers,
No wonder she’s morose

I am writing to you about this student,
Who just came out as gay.
He now sits alone at lunch,
For no one cared if he strayed.

I am writing to you about this student,
Who just moved here recently.
She is terrified of her locker,
Cruel notes are arriving frequently.

I am writing to you about this student,
Who studies eight hours a day.
She has recently been seen with scar marks
That carve out the letter “A.”

I am writing to you about this student,
Who is new to the soccer team.
He recently broke several bones,
Due to hazing off the soccer scene.

I am writing to you as a bystander,
Watching these things pass by.
Never trying to help.
Never trying to stop.
The things that come across my eyes.

I’m done with simply watching,
Just letting these pass by.
Everyone has their quirks.
Everyone has their struggles.
I can no longer fathom why?

Why people are cruel?
Why people are mean?
Why people are insecure?
We are all people aren’t we?
And thus I offer full disclosure

Today this ends.
Today I will try.
Today is the day,
I will no longer be a passerby.
