Brown v. Board

The parents stand straight,
Awaiting a verdict that they know they should win.
The press scribbles and jots,
Knowing they are where history is being made.
Plessy has held for years,
But times have changed.
Brown and his fellow parents have pled their case,
Hoping for a better future for their colored
But kind, smart, caring, amazing children.
The nine old white men return.
The verdict is read –
The room falls silent.
Nine old white men have agreed –
Nine new votes for Brown.
Separation is inherently unequal –
A new victory!
All due speed may be to slow, but it’s a start.
History will not forget
The brave parents
Who went up against the unbeatable Board
As society as they knew it
And won.
