For a Black Girl

Can’t black girls be smart?
Does the sight of us show ignorance?
A wave of discomfort and anger washes over me when I hear
“You’re smart for a black girl”
As if my skin color defines my intelligence.
Who are they to measure my knowledge and judge my success according to my race?
Just wait. I’ll show them a “smart black girl”.
