Because I Loved You

*inhale*

There you were.

You looked at me and time stopped.

You were hers and I was no ones, but you looked at me anyway.

You looked broken, and because I have so much love to give, I gave it to you…

Because I saw the pain behind your smile and I loved you.

*exhale*

You ended things with her and found you could be yourself with me.

Because I loved you, I didn’t judge you.

I laughed at your cheesy dad jokes, because 1. They were actually funny and 2. Because I knew it made you feel better.

It made you feel like you could take on the world.

I wanted you to be happy.

Because I loved you.

One day, things changed…

You didn’t like me laughing at your jokes…

You called me “dumb” you said I was “too much.”

You grew tired of me, but instead of just saying that, you found another…

She didn’t make you happy, but when she hurt you, I was there…

Because I loved you.

*exhale*

I was by your side while you were in another relationship.

She told you who you could and couldn’t talk to…

She said, “I love you.”

But, I showed you what that meant and you knew she was wrong.

You tried to leave her, but her grip on you was too tight.

You dealt with it…

Because I loved you.

*inhale*

You finally got away.

It only cost you a broken heart.

She grew tired of you…

I grew tired of trying to be there because you kept taking your pain out on me.

People can only take so much pushing away before they’re gone!

You pushed and pushed. You called me every night.

You cussed me. You called me names. You would come over and I would open the door…

Because I loved you…

*exhale*

I still love you.

But…

I have even more love to give to someone else.

You asked me who?

I told you…

*inhale*

Myself.
