The Beat

Location

I used to have wings

They dripped golden light

And were as strong as the hardest steel

My wings had their own music

And sang along to my beating heart

You didn't used to have wings

All you had were your looks

You dressed sharp

In all your self-centered glory

And covered your ugliness with sweet blood

One day we met

One quick look and I was shark bait

You sang sad songs that made me cry

And changed the beat of my heart

Even sadder was how much I loved it

One day I turned my back to you

Exposing my wings

They dripped sweet blood

And sang to my sad beat

In your eyes they weren't enough

When I finally looked towards you

You smiled and I smiled back

Then you turned me back around

Tore off my lyrics

Trying to see the real me beneath it

You ripped off my wings

Hoping you'd find something as hideous as you

Instead you saw something sweeter than blood

That dripped golden light

The beat that can never be yours
