The Battle

While it may not help that I’m just a kid from suburbia,
Born in the 1990s and white
It certainly does not mean I’m ignorant to the struggle
That occurred long ago,
In the battle for civil rights.

I may have only learned about it in books
Movies, interviews and TV shows,
But that doesn’t mean I can still feel the power,
The contest, the plight
In the battle for civil rights

No I wasn’t there, No, I didn’t fight.
But I learned, I felt, and I empathized.
I will never know how it felt.
I can never attempt to try.
But I can remember all those who fought, who cried
Who won, and broke the divide
In the battle for civil rights
