the bad nights

In my dreams, we have a home together

I'm a little bit older, but you never age

We come home from work—

But it isn't work, we love our jobs—

We embrace the way we always do

We kiss and mumble and breathe against one another's lips

And ask about our days

Dinner is put together through snickers

And subtle grabs of one another

And we chatter

We're happy

At night, we sleep underneath the covers

But we talk and talk until we're out of it

You always insist on holding me

And you're never asleep first

Sometimes, I fake it so you'll relax

On the bad nights, I hold you

You bury your face in my shoulder

While my lips brush your hair in silence

On the worst nights, you don't sleep at all

You finally tell me about how much things hurt

You finally show me

On weekends, we try new things

We ask questions too obscure to think about

We keep talking because it's what we're good at

And we love every word exchanged

We dread the arrival of Monday

Because it means days spent away from each other

At present, we have a home together

I think I'm too young and you think you're too old

We walk in from work—

But it isn't work, it's hell, we hate where we live—

We embrace the way we always do

We kiss and mumble and breathe against one other's lips

And ask about our nights

Coffee is put together through snickers

And subtle grabs of one another

And we chatter

We're happy

At night, we hide out where we can

We make love however we can until we have to depart

You always insist on holding me

And you're always finished first

But I couldn't fake it if I tried, you feel too good

On the bad nights, I hold you

You bury your face in my shoulder

While my lips brush your hair in silence

On the worst nights, you tell me how badly you want to cry

But you only tell me about how much things hurt

You never show me

On weekends, we see one another if we're lucky

We ask questions too obscure to think about

We keep talking because it's what we're good at

And we love every word exchanged

We await the arrival of Monday

Because it means we'll be home together again
