Atonement

Do you remember

our adventures?

our dreams and secrets, too?

Do you remember

our story together?

Oh, how I hope you do.

Do you remember

the old wood shed?

behind which

we planned our lives:

yours, fraught with piracy,

wit as sharp as knives

as mine continually hoped

ours would forever

be entwined.

Do you remember

the old light house?

our secret hiding place.

Hidden amongst the mist and fog

ne’er leaving a trace.

It was there

I did return

years since our last.

Staring off

against the sea

willing this sorrow to pass.

As I sit with remembrance

my heart heavy
with ache,

my thoughts return

to you, my love;

despite the wrong turns

I take.

I sit.

I remember

surrounded yet alone.

Begging you

to come back,

so desperate to atone.
