And They Finally Saw

I am far removed from my appearance

Well behaved child of separate parents

Sacrificing for others always

Only all done for convenience

Nice because I am naïve

Yet nice gets me what real doesn’t

Humility shrouded in pride

Anxious anger to hide

I keep neutrality in their sight

‘Cause choosing a side

Will get me a bite

Of the real present

Be transparent

Be nice

Assertion can wait

They all just took the bait

But I’m not clear or see-through

I am flesh and I am bones

I am veins and I am blood

That’s when I grew

When I no longer was rose-colored

When finally I became brown, black, and yellow

And they saw a human

And finally a woman
