The Writing of Poems

"Why do we write?", is the question she asked ten years ago to her second grade class. The class became silent. Perhaps they were shy. Or perhaps not one of them really new why. It was becoming quite obvious no one had a thought to share, when at last a small hand shot up in the air. "Yes?", asked the teacher to the eager child. The small girl stood up and said with a smile, "To write is to tell the thoughts in your head. To write is to say what no one has said. We write because some thoughts aren't meant to be said, but belong on paper and written in lead." In a seventh grade class five years ago, the weather was cold and it had started to snow. The school was alive with excitement that day as eveyone anticipated the holiday break. Before the day was declared to be through, their teacher gave them one more thing to do. "This assignment isn't hard, so please, just listen. Each of you will be given a question. Answer this question in a sentence or two. When we return is when they are due." I opened the slip that was placed on my desk and read the question that it possessed. It took me no longer than just a few seconds to know my answer after I read it. When we returned, we read our answers to the class. When it was my turn, I told them what I was asked. "My question was 'why do you write?'" then I read them the words I wrote in graphite. "To write is to tell the thoughts in your head. To write is to say what no one has said. I write because some thoughts aren't meant to be said, but belong on paper and written in lead." With this answer I recieved a high score, but when I think about it, writing is so much more. The reason I write is to tell my thoughts, yes. But in a way that spoken words cannot express. To write is to learn and to live and to know. It is its own language that helps us to grow. When everything is dark, written words can be a light. As for me, I write with love. That is why I write.
